Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities of a Family Law Legal Assistant


As a Family Law Paralegal, you will play a critical role in supporting our attorneys and clients in a variety of family law matters. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Draft and prepare legal documents such as petitions, motions, pleadings, judgments and declarations.

  • Organize and manage case files, ensuring all documents are submitted correctly and on time.

  • Assist in the preparation of discovery documents and responses.

  • Conduct legal research to support case preparation and strategy.

  • Investigate and gather facts relevant to cases, including interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.

  • Summarize and analyze legal documents and research findings for attorney review.

  • Prepare and file court documents, ensuring compliance with court rules and deadlines.

  • Coordinate and schedule statements, hearings and other judicial activities.

  • Support attorneys during trials and hearings by organizing evidence and managing case files.

  • Maintain attorney calendars, schedule appointments, and manage deadlines.

  • Provide general assistance to attorneys and other team members as needed.

  • Provide guidance to clients on procedures and documentation requirements.

  • Support junior legal assistants and paralegals.

  • Ensure that all activities comply with legal and ethical standards.

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of information and case details.

  • Conduct interviews with clients to gather information about their legal issues.

  • Perform administrative tasks such as answering phone calls and keeping the case filing system organized so documents are easily accessible.

  • Assist attorneys in preparing for trial by organizing evidence, assisting in client meetings, filing motions, researching legal articles, and coordinating witnesses.

  • Draft subpoenas and coordinate with court process servers.

  • Assist in the preparation of legal documentation, pleadings and correspondence, including interrogatories, subpoenas, deposition notices, complaints, pre-trial orders, legal briefs and affidavits.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in legal services under the supervision of an attorney in a law firm.

  • Have completed an ABA-approved paralegal certification program, such as an associate's degree or a program at a school specializing in paralegal studies (bachelor's degree preferred).

  • Strong interpersonal skills and talent for writing and grammar.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with professional certification in legal assistance or advanced training in the area.

  • High level organizational skills and excellent time management.

Salary or Compensation

$35 - $40 per hour
